A July 20, 1969 broadcast to the Johnson Space Center from Apollo 11’s LEM “Eagle” said, “If you’ll excuse me a minute, I’m going to have a cup of coffee.”
Ernest Hemingway wrote, “It was a pleasant cafe, warm and clean and friendly, and I hung up my old water-proof on the coat rack to dry and put my worn and weathered felt hat on the rack above the bench and ordered a cafe au lait. The waiter brought it and I took out a notebook from the pocket of the coat and a pencil and started to write.”
I am sitting here drinking the perfect cup of coffee. I’m not going to tell you where I got it….yet. It’s not perfect because it cost me $5. It’s not perfect because it is made up of all kinds of unique blends or has whipped cream or salt on top. It is perfect because it is exactly what I craved (correction: need) right now. It is hot, not too strong, a little sweet and just the right temperature. It was convenient. I wanted coffee, was thinking about driving home and making some but I wanted it now! And I was able to drive through and drink it on the way home. We are after all part of the “now” generation. I want it NOW!!! Coffee is very important to me. It brings me lots of pleasure, it can give me false hopes of energy and alertness but yet, doesn’t generally let me down. I am not a coffee snob. Nor am I a coffee aficionado. I will try the coffee in many places with prices ranging anywhere from 89 cents a cup to over $5 a cup! I am however a little angered by coffee snobs (and somewhat embarrassed if they are with me!) If you have to tell the barista in minute detail how to make your drink….just go home and make it yourself. I have had more interesting drinks by letting the barista suggest and make me something (and a lot more goodies and treats along the way) After all, it‘s true what they say “you catch more flies with honey”….pun intended! Though I am not discriminatory until I try it, if I don’t like it, I won’t be back. I will try places by the name and atmosphere. Couldn’t wait to taste the coffee at Wicked (a drive through kiosk) It didn’t disappoint. Well… a little. The service far exceeded the coffee but I enjoyed the visit and more than tolerated the coffee. Now, about the coffee I make at home. There are a few brands that I like. One is my everyday coffee and the others, quite a bit more expensive are for special occasions, sometime mixed in with the everyday brand or simply when the mood hits me. Though I usually make it the same way every time, some cups just taste better than others. For me, coffee is the ultimate “comfort” food. It comes packed with promises, lovely aromas and where applicable, lots of love.
