I couldn’t not reblog this. Especially in light of the blog I posted last night. Horrific violence is everywhere.

I’m posting a link to a woman’s blog, from WP, who died in last night’s theater shooting in Colorado.  Last month there was a mall shooting in Toronto, and she was there, and she survived.  Last night, not so.

“like” her post.

10 things I would tell my younger self

Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.  ~Judy Garland

1)Use moisturizer. Your skin won’t always be this dewy.

2)Work those pecs. They will “stand” you in good stead when gravity starts to drop ’em down!

3)Use sunscreen. Except for wrinkles, I know I have dodged a bullet. Not everyone has.

4)Wear sunglasses. They will help protect you from cataracts and keep many of the crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles at bay.

5)Don’t be afraid to smile. A few crow’s feet and lines around your mouth really DO add character.

6)Take pictures-lots and lots of pictures and keep them in a safe place.

7)Make friends and keep in touch with them. No excuses.

8)Tell and demonstrate to the people you love that you love them.

Help one another, is part of the religion of sisterhood.
— Louisa May Alcott

9)Be true to yourself. Don’t sell yourself short. Even if you don’t agree with the outcome, you won’t have to second guess your own motives.

10)You are the star of your own life. Dance as if EVERYONE is watching!

I think of life itself now as a wonderful play that I’ve written for myself, and so my purpose is to have the utmost fun playing my part.  ~Shirley MacLaine

Fear

The only real failure in life is not to be true to the best one knows.
Buddha

It’s funny how fear can paralyze you. I’m talking about the fear of rejection. The fear of putting yourself out there. Either I shut down or talk about inane things, just so I don’t have to say what I really want to say. But…there are times when it propels me into a juggernaut! In other words, fear either totally immobilizes  me or makes me act stupid! For example, I was asked to present on a subject very near and dear to me to some of my company’s managers during a conference call. As I had plenty of time beforehand, I prepared my speech. Piece of cake! Beautiful? Not!!! Epic fail! My hands got sweaty, my mouth dry and I could barely even read it. And I am quite sure that the speed reading monotone I used could earn me the Oscar this year! Then comes team games and sports. Even when I’m pretty sure I know the answer, I am so afraid of being wrong or letting the team down that I don’t assert myself. Big mistake! Then there are the personal things like friends, kids, family members, co-workers, etc…I will watch them walk away and I can’t move or say a word. When they are gone I will fall apart because: A) I hurt them B) They hurt me C) A miscommunication happened and it grew bigger instead of being cleared up D) I either communicated ridiculously or failed to communicate at all, thereby conveying the message that I didn’t care when in fact, the complete opposite was true. I cared too much….

So where does this leave me on the brink of my reinvention? A new commitment, to acknowledge that it is not always easy for me, to share that information with the party that  my attempt at typical communication may in actuality look like sabotage. To stop, think and breathe and say what I think, despite the outcome!

Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate.

~ John F. Kennedy

“People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.”
― Martin Luther King Jr.

Magic

“Superstition is the poetry of life” Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, The Maxims and Reflections of Goethe

“The only real valuable thing is intuition” Albert Einstein

Ok. I admit it. I wish on stars, cross my fingers and try very hard not to step on cracks. And, yes, I always make a wish when I blow out my birthday candles and kiss the clock at 11:11 or any other time that suits my fancy! I believe in intuition, women’s or otherwise and I will go out of my way so that nothing will ever come between me and the people I care about when we are walking together.I also have little games I like to play that in my mind will predict an outcome for me. For instance: If I get 3 green lights in a row, then I won’t have to do something I’ve dreaded. Or: If Pandora plays a certain song when I am thinking about someone or something, the words of the song will define the situation. What can I say? I’m a little strange but when it comes between choosing to be like this or being more logical, I choose magical because….as the Black Eyed Peas so aptly put it “I’ve got a Feeling”

“Superstition is to religion what astrology is to astronomy: the mad daughter of a wise mother”

Voltaire

“I feel there are two people inside me- me and my intuition.  If I go against her, she’ll screw me every time, but if I follow her, we get along quite nicely”  Kim Basinger

The Answer…

….to the luckiest mom in the world

For those of you who read “Letter to my Daughter“http://reinventingmyselfinto.com/2012/04/23/letter-to-my-daughter/ , we decided to share her answer here:

“My mother… she is beautiful, softened at the edges and tempered with a spine of steel. I want to grow old and be like her.”
― Jodi Picoult

“Hey mom
So I just read it. I love you.
Thank you so much for being so understanding and supportive. I really don’t know what I would do without you helping me through everything. If I had to imagine the perfect mother in my head, I’d just think of you  Thank you for letting me be myself. And for letting me mess up. And for helping me fix things when I do. Thank you for showing me what a beautiful woman, inside and out, should be. If you think I’m as great as you say, please know that it’s only because I had you as my example. Life hasn’t been easy for you, either, but you just become better and better each day because of it, despite it. I admire you to no end, mom. I look up to you in every aspect of life.
I’d be lucky to end up half the woman you are. You are truly the best person I have ever met. And to think I get to call you my mom, my best friend and my hero.. I’m one lucky girl
I love you so much, mom. Thank you for every single hug, kiss, fight, birthday card, present, late night drive, meal, “I love you”, wish, prayer and smile.
<3Tori”

“Did you ever know that you’re my hero” Bette Midler http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9ZMDPf9hZw

To be honest, I’m not sure if the above quote and song is from her to me… or me to her!

“As mothers and daughters, we are connected with one another. My mother is the bones of my spine, keeping me straight and true. She is my blood, making sure it runs rich and strong. She is the beating of my heart. I cannot now imagine a life without her.”

Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder

Groucho Marx

“I think women are sexy when they got some clothes on. And if later they take them off then you’ve triumphed. Somebody once said it’s what you dont see you’re interested in, and this is true.”
― Groucho Marx

So…I recently read an article about what men look for in women. They said:

Men like women with freckles. check

Men like women who don’t wear a lot of make-up. check

Men like women who are nerdy. check

Men like women who wear glasses. check.

There were more but I can’t remember them now.

But, that’s 4 out of 4! So, my question is….where are all these men??!!

I haven’t seen anyone knocking down any doors to find me!

I’m not talking about “cat calls” or horn honking or pick up lines kind of attraction. I’m talking about the kind that is saying, “I like you. I want to get to know you better” I want to hear something like this:

“Tonight was… well, it was perfect for me too. You’ve turned my world upside down. I’ve fallen in love with you, chica, and it scares the f—–‘ s— outta me. I’ve been shakin’ all night, because I knew it.I’ve tried to deny it, to make you think I wanted you as a fake girlfriend, but that was a lie.”
― Simone Elkeles, Rules of Attraction

and where is this guy?:

“That’s always seemed so ridiculous to me, that people want to be around someone because they’re pretty. It’s like picking your breakfeast cereals based on color instead of taste.”
― John Green, Paper Towns

And then, there is the amazing Nicholas sparks, who always knows just  exactly what to say and when:

“He liked her; it was as simple as that.”
― Nicholas Sparks, The Last Song

And…last but not least, we can always blame this:

“The problem with human attraction is not knowing if it will be returned.”
― Becca Fitzpatrick, Hush, Hush

Yes….that must be it!

Feng Shui?

‘Home is your corner of the world’. ♥ Ilse Crawford

It’s funny how little things like someone leaving the toilet seat up or toothpaste all over the sink, can make you crazy. Not to mention if you like your toilet paper roller over or under. But, it’s not just the things that could cause bodily harm (and if you ever flopped down on an unseated toilet, you’d know what I’m sayin’) that annoy us….It is also the things that assault us aesthetically.

We like our things where we put them. You can use that ashtray or sit in that chair  but when you are done, put it back. Exactly. Where. it. Was. Obsessive-compulsive? Maybe. Or maybe we are just creatures of habit. We like the familiarity of knowing where things are. So many things in life are beyond our control. This is one place that is clearly ours.

Got Books?

“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.”

— Frederick Douglass

I love books. Anyone who knows me, knows this. Currently I have 3 books next to my bed. One that I am reading, one that I need to read and the other? It’s there just because I can’t wait to read it. Sometimes the anticipation of a good book, motivates me to get other things done so I can read! Sometimes, more likely than not, I skip the other things and just read!

Yesterday was “World Book Day“. It was suggested that we share a book with a friend. The obvious beauty in this is that you now have someone to discuss the book with. In January, I joined and went to my first book club. I was so excited before I went (not gonna lie!) feeling fairly self-important, I strutted around for a few days before like George Jefferson from the “The Jefferson’s”  making sure everyone knew I was going! I even read Oprah‘s etiquette on book clubs! My book club has actually been even better than I anticipated. It is a warm, spirited group of women that share my love of books and as we continue to meet, we are finding that books are only one thing we have in common!

I have learned that although the act of reading a book may be solitary, the gift of sharing it can be a truly bonding experience.

“So please, oh PLEASE, we beg, we pray, Go throw your TV set away, And in its place you can install, A lovely bookshelf on the wall.”

Throughout history there have been incredible women who have lead us, inspired us and encouraged us to do the right thing. The woman in this short movie all have one thing in common; rather than taking the road well traveled… they decided to blaze their own trail!
